At least six people have lost their lives in devastating forest fires that swept through parts of northern Algeria, according to the country’s Interior Ministry.

The ministry said emergency response teams, including firefighters, civil protection personnel, and security forces, were deployed to battle the fast-moving blazes and evacuate residents from communities threatened by the fires.

Authorities attributed the rapid spread of the wildfires to extreme temperatures, dry vegetation, and strong winds, which created favorable conditions for the flames to intensify across several forested areas.

In addition to the reported fatalities, the fires destroyed vegetation, threatened homes, and forced precautionary evacuations in some affected communities. Officials said efforts were continuing to contain the remaining hotspots and prevent the fires from spreading further.

The Algerian government expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and pledged continued support for victims and emergency responders working around the clock to bring the situation under control.

Wildfires have become an increasingly frequent challenge in Algeria during the summer months, with prolonged heatwaves and changing climate conditions contributing to more intense and destructive fire seasons across the Mediterranean region.

Authorities have urged residents living near forests and wildfire-prone areas to remain vigilant, comply with evacuation orders where necessary, and report any signs of new outbreaks to emergency services immediately.

As firefighting operations continue, officials say investigations into the cause of the fires will be conducted once the situation has been fully contained.
