President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated the establishment of an additional 500 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refueling stations throughout Nigeria. This move is aimed at curbing transportation costs subsequent to the elimination of the petrol subsidy.

This directive aims to extend Nigeria’s CNG refueling network to a total of 1,000 stations, with the government anticipating that broader access to this more affordable fuel will result in decreased transport fares for Nigerians.

Tinubu announced this initiative on Thursday after convening with state governors, emphasizing strategies to mitigate the effects of high transportation costs on households and businesses.

The President stated that governors have committed to taking immediate actions within their jurisdiction to lower transport fares by promoting alternatives like CNG and electric vehicles.

Federal Government Enhances CNG Infrastructure

Tinubu elaborated that these 500 new stations would supplement the previously approved 500 CNG refueling stations, highlighting the government’s commitment to making CNG more accessible for motorists and transport operators nationwide.

The President underscored that the ultimate goal is not just to increase the number of stations but also to ensure that Nigerians experience cost savings in transportation.

This comes as the nation adapts to the economic shifts following the removal of petrol subsidies, which have led to increased fuel prices and higher operating costs for transport operators.

Potential Fuel Savings with CNG

Tinubu noted that CNG-powered vehicles could yield significant savings compared to those running on petrol. Depending on conditions and prices, CNG vehicles might reduce fuel expenses by as much as 60 to 80 percent compared to their petrol counterparts.

The government is hopeful that lower operational costs for commercial vehicles will allow fare reductions while ensuring business sustainability.

However, success depends on several factors: CNG availability, vehicle conversion costs, infrastructure reliability, and the readiness of operators to switch fuels.

Governors’ Role in Lowering Transport Fares

State governments are expected to play a crucial role in delivering the benefits of affordable energy to local commuters. Intra-state travel is where the impact of rising fuel costs is most keenly felt by Nigerians.

To tackle this, a federal-state joint committee will be formed, tasked with exploring ways to reduce transportation costs starting from October 1.

“Our aim is for Nigerians to save through lower transport fares,” Tinubu emphasized, suggesting that cheaper fuels should eventually lead to reduced transportation charges.

CNG Adoption: A Central Element in Transport Reform

This initiative fits into a larger federal agenda promoting a shift from petrol-based transport to alternative energy sources. With vast natural gas resources, Nigeria sees CNG as a key player in this transition due to its potential cost-saving benefits.

The government is also advancing vehicle conversion programs for existing petrol vehicles to operate on CNG. However, the program’s success hinges on the timely availability of refueling stations and consistently affordable CNG supply.

Implications for Nigerians

If executed well, expanding CNG facilities could bring broad economic benefits. Reduced transport costs may lessen household expenses for commuting and lower logistics costs for businesses reliant on road transport.

Consequently, this could ease price pressures on goods, particularly essentials sensitive to transport-related costs. The plan might also spark higher investment in Nigeria’s natural gas sector, boosting opportunities in vehicle conversion, CNG distribution, infrastructure development, and associated technical services.

Focus on Implementation

Despite potential advantages, observers will be closely monitoring government implementation efforts regarding the expansion of this infrastructure towards achieving the intended 1,000 stations.
