Security analyst and lawyer, Dr. Bulama Bukarti, has advised Nigerians to be more cautious when donating online, highlighting the risk of terrorist financiers using social media and international money transfer platforms to channel illicit funds.
During an appearance on Channels Television, Bukarti pointed out that individuals might unknowingly support terrorism through misleading humanitarian and educational campaigns shared online.
He cited the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), which uncovered networks allegedly utilizing platforms like Telegram and Instagram to gather donations before moving the money using international remittance services.
Bukarti emphasized that people should continue supporting genuine humanitarian efforts but urged donors to verify organizations and recipients before sending funds.
He also advocated for stronger financial oversight, including better integration of BVNs and SIM cards, to assist authorities in tracking suspicious transactions and preventing account misuse.
Bukarti noted that monitoring financial flows is crucial in combating terrorism financing.
He also encouraged Nigerians to exercise caution when handling packages for others and urged security agencies to swiftly investigate and prosecute suspected financial crimes through proper legal channels.
