President Donald Trump has announced a new wave of trade restrictions targeting Canadian goods, adding fresh pressure to an already strained economic relationship between the United States and Canada.

Under executive orders signed on Tuesday, Washington will prohibit the importation of several Canadian products beginning September 29. The affected goods include alcoholic spirits, certain dairy products and motorbikes.

The White House said the restrictions were necessary because Canada was allegedly treating American businesses unfairly by placing limits on US products that were not being applied equally to goods from other countries.

Washington said some products would be completely excluded from the US market, while other Canadian goods would face increased tariffs.

Whey and non-alcoholic beer are among the products facing an outright import ban, while cheese and motorboats are among those facing additional tariff increases.

The announcement coincided with the implementation of Canada’s latest retaliatory tariffs against American products.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged the economic challenges involved in reducing Canada’s reliance on the US market, saying the country’s move to diversify its trade relationships would come with a cost.

Despite the increasingly hostile trade measures, both governments have maintained that they remain interested in reaching a negotiated settlement.

However, negotiations have been stalled since talks collapsed at the end of August, with no new round of discussions announced.

The latest development represents another escalation in a trade dispute that has increasingly affected companies, workers and consumers in both countries.

The Trump administration previously imposed tariffs of as much as 50% on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. Canadian furniture and wine producers, along with sporting and fishing equipment businesses, were among those affected.

Ottawa responded by imposing equivalent tariffs on selected US products, including steel, clothing and furniture.

Businesses on both sides of the border have warned that continued tariffs and restrictions could push up consumer prices while reducing sales and weakening cross-border supply chains.

Canada sends a significant share of its exports to the United States, making the American market particularly important to its economy. The US also relies heavily on Canada as a major source of imported goods and as one of its principal trading partners.

Trump’s latest action comes just days after he threatened additional measures against Bombardier, saying the Canadian aircraft manufacturer could lose access to the US market if it does not shift production to the United States.

As Washington and Ottawa continue to exchange trade restrictions, pressure is growing on both sides to return to the negotiating table and prevent the dispute from causing deeper economic damage.
