Enzo Fernandez has revealed his admiration for Erling Haaland after the Manchester City striker scored both goals in their 2-0 Champions League victory against FC Porto.
The Norwegian forward struck twice in the second half to settle a difficult contest in Portugal and give City a strong start to their European campaign.
Fernandez, who joined City from Chelsea, provided the assist for Haaland’s first goal with a cross that the striker finished from close range.
The Argentine midfielder was full of praise for his new teammate after the final whistle, describing Haaland as an “animal” and a “beast” because of his determination and attacking instincts.
Fernandez said he would continue looking for Haaland whenever he gets the opportunity, while expressing his desire to provide the striker with more assists.
The midfielder also spoke highly of Haaland away from football, describing him as an excellent person who had helped him settle into life at City.
Haaland’s second goal arrived in stoppage time when he used a single touch of his right foot to redirect a pass from Rayan Ait-Nouri into the net.
The performance added another milestone to Haaland’s Champions League record, with Porto becoming the 22nd different club he has scored against in the competition.
City had initially struggled to break through Porto’s defence, with goalkeeper Diogo Costa denying Haaland on several occasions before half-time.
The visitors eventually found the breakthrough after the interval, with Haaland proving decisive when his chances arrived.
Haaland scored eight Champions League goals in 10 matches last season, although City’s European campaign ended in the round of 16 following defeat to Real Madrid.
With the new season now underway, Haaland’s early goals will provide City with encouragement as they look to make another serious challenge for European football’s biggest club trophy.
