Wike: Nigerians’ Political Dependence Could Shape 2027 Presidential Election

Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has argued that Nigeria’s economic hardship and insecurity should not automatically be viewed as factors that would prevent President Bola Tinubu from winning another term in office.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, Wike said the way Nigerians make political decisions is influenced by relationships with political leaders and the support networks that exist at the grassroots.

The former Rivers governor acknowledged that hunger and insecurity would likely remain important subjects during the 2027 election campaign.

However, he urged observers to examine Nigerian politics based on its realities rather than relying solely on theoretical assumptions about how voters should behave.

Wike pointed to political relationships at the family, community, ward and local government levels as factors that can affect electoral decisions.

He said some Nigerians depend on political leaders for assistance, including access to food and other forms of support. In his view, this level of dependence can influence how voters respond to political parties and candidates.

“There is no election in Nigeria where the issue of hunger and insecurity won’t come up,” Wike said.

He also recalled that similar complaints about insecurity and hardship featured prominently during elections held while Muhammadu Buhari was president.

Wike’s position suggests that economic difficulties alone may not determine the direction of the 2027 vote. Political networks, personal relationships and grassroots mobilisation could also play significant roles.

The debate is expected to intensify as political parties and potential candidates prepare for the next presidential contest.

With Nigerians continuing to face concerns over living costs and security, the ability of political parties to convince voters that they can address these challenges is likely to remain a major issue in the buildup to the election.

Wike, however, remains optimistic about Tinubu’s chances, arguing that the realities of Nigerian politics must be properly understood when assessing the president’s prospects for another term.
