Military authorities in Chad have accused the Sudanese army of conducting drone attacks on a convoy within Chadian territory. This incident has heightened fears that Sudan’s ongoing conflict might extend beyond its borders.

Chadian officials reported that the attack took place on Thursday in the East Ennedi province, situated more than 100 kilometers from the Sudanese border. The alleged assault targeted vehicles inside Chad, sparking worries about potential escalation between the neighboring nations.

In response, Chad has placed its military forces on high alert and cautioned the opposing groups involved in Sudan’s conflict against infringing on its territory. Chadian authorities emphasized that they would defend their territorial integrity if such attacks or incursions persist.

This situation unfolds as Sudan’s devastating war, which started in April 2023, continues to fuel regional instability. The conflict involves a struggle for control between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Relations between Chad and Sudan have been under strain due to allegations related to the conflict. Sudan has accused Chad of supporting the RSF, claiming that fighters and military supplies have traversed through Chadian land. Chad has rejected these claims and consistently voiced concerns over the humanitarian and security impacts of the war spilling over its borders.

The reported drone attack has intensified fears that the conflict in Sudan could pose a growing threat to neighboring countries. Chad is already hosting a significant number of refugees fleeing violence in Sudan, particularly from the Darfur region, adding pressure on its security and humanitarian resources.

Continued military actions within Chadian borders could further deteriorate relations between N’Djamena and Khartoum, increasing the risk of a broader regional crisis. Consequently, Chadian authorities have urged all parties in the Sudanese conflict to respect its borders, while asserting that their security forces are ready to address any further territorial violations.
