The Nigeria Customs Service has announced N4.3 trillion in revenue collected during the first six months of 2026, pointing to the growing impact of technology, compliance monitoring and intensified audits on the country’s revenue system.

The amount was recorded from January through June and represents 36.4 per cent of the N11.074 trillion target approved for the service for the entire year.

The figures were presented during the 65th Regular Meeting of the Nigeria Customs Service Board, presided over by the Minister of Finance, Professor Taiwo Oyedele.

Digital Systems Take Centre Stage

Customs’ improved revenue performance has increasingly been linked to the adoption of digital tools designed to make border and trade operations more efficient.

The B’Odogwu digital system remains one of the key platforms supporting the service’s revenue operations. Customs has also increased its deployment of geospatial technology while expanding audit activities aimed at detecting discrepancies and improving compliance among importers and other stakeholders.

Joint border patrols and closer engagement with the trading community have also formed part of the broader strategy.

Rather than depending exclusively on physical enforcement, the approach combines technology, data, auditing and field operations to improve the government’s ability to track transactions and protect public revenue.

New Measures Approved

The Customs Board also approved several measures intended to strengthen the institution beyond its revenue responsibilities.

The Customs Medical Corps received approval for an upgrade to sub-departmental status, while the Board endorsed the De-Minimis Regulation 2025.

The service’s ongoing recruitment exercise is also being reviewed as authorities seek to ensure that new personnel and institutional structures meet operational requirements.

Revenue Performance at a Glance

N4.30 trillion — revenue generated from January to June 2026.

N11.074 trillion — full-year revenue target.

36.4% — proportion of the annual target achieved during the first half.

B’Odogwu, geospatial technology and audits — among the major tools supporting revenue collection.

The mid-year result comes at a time when the Federal Government is under pressure to improve domestic revenue generation and reduce dependence on other sources of public financing.

For Customs, maintaining the current pace in the remaining months of 2026 will depend on sustaining digital reforms, improving compliance and continuing efforts to block leakages across the import and export chain.

The performance also demonstrates how technology can increasingly become a central component of Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen revenue mobilisation at its borders.
