A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Okai Austin, has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to caution the Chairman of Kuje Area Council, Samuel Shekwolo, over remarks he described as divisive and capable of heightening political tensions.
Okai, a human rights activist, made the call in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday following a viral video in which Shekwolo was allegedly heard threatening to deal with critics on social media.
The council chairman was also accused of telling residents who do not support the ruling All Progressives Congress to leave the area council.
Reacting, Okai described the alleged comments as “uncalled for” and warned that inflammatory statements by public officials could increase tensions and potentially lead to violence.
He stressed that the Federal Capital Territory belongs to Nigerians and should remain a place where residents can peacefully express different political opinions.
Okai urged Shekwolo to exercise restraint and promote tolerance, inclusiveness and peaceful coexistence among Kuje residents regardless of their political affiliations.
The ADC chieftain also appealed to Wike and other relevant authorities to review the comments attributed to the council chairman and intervene before the situation escalates.
He urged political leaders to settle disagreements through dialogue and responsible engagement, stressing that public officials have a duty to protect peace and respect divergent political views.
