Former PDP National Chairman Bamanga Mohammed Tukur has passed away at the age of 90.
His death was announced by his family on Saturday, September 12, 2026.
A statement signed by his son, Awwal D. Tukur, described him as a beloved father and family patriarch.
The family said Tukur devoted his life to serving his family, community, Adamawa State and Nigeria.
According to the statement, he “returned to his Creator” on Saturday.
Family Pays Tribute
The family thanked relatives, friends and well-wishers for their prayers and condolences.
It also said arrangements for his Janazah and burial would be announced in due course.
The family prayed that Allah would forgive Tukur’s shortcomings and reward his good deeds with Aljannatul Firdaus.
From Gongola Governor to Federal Minister
Tukur had a long career in public service.
Born on September 15, 1935, he later became governor of the old Gongola State.
He also served as Minister of Industries under the military government of the late General Sani Abacha.
His public service career included leadership at the Nigerian Ports Authority, where he served as General Manager and Chief Executive.
Tukur was also involved in business and initiatives focused on African economic development.
Leadership of the PDP
In March 2012, Tukur became National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party.
He assumed the position during the presidency of Goodluck Jonathan.
His tenure coincided with growing divisions within the ruling party.
One of the major developments during that period was the emergence of the New PDP faction in 2013.
Tukur eventually resigned as PDP national chairman in January 2014.
The Jonathan administration later appointed him Ambassador-at-Large.
A Long Public Life
Tukur’s death came just three days before his 91st birthday.
Over several decades, he served in politics, government, business and public institutions.
His career included leadership roles at both state and federal levels.
He leaves behind a legacy spanning Nigeria’s political and public-service history.
