Barcelona has secured an agreement with Manchester City to sign Spanish World Cup winner Rodri, as revealed by a source from the Catalan club on Sunday.
The 30-year-old midfielder is set to transfer for approximately 75 million euros ($87 million), according to reports.
In the next few days, an official statement will be released confirming the transfer, stated the Barcelona source.
After Spain’s World Cup victory in July, Rodri was speculated to join Real Madrid. However, Barcelona made a strong push to acquire the former Atletico Madrid star, who has been instrumental in Manchester City’s success since his arrival in 2019.
The midfielder, who earned the Ballon d’Or in 2024, has faced injuries over the past two seasons but made a significant impact as Spain clinched their second World Cup.
Barcelona’s Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong is anticipated to be out for several months due to injury, prompting the club’s move for Rodri.
The Spanish champions had two initial bids for Rodri turned down but finally reached an agreement with City on Sunday. He joins Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, and Jesse Bisiwu in making the switch to Camp Nou this summer.
Rodri, as Spain’s captain, played a crucial role under Pep Guardiola at City, leading the team to the 2023 Champions League victory and securing four Premier League titles among 12 major trophies.
Barcelona is also expected to finalize a deal for Joao Cancelo soon, following his loan spell last season from Al Hilal.
