At least eight people have been killed and more than 30 injured after a wave of Russian missile strikes hit Kyiv and surrounding areas overnight, Ukrainian authorities said.
The large-scale attack damaged residential buildings, warehouses, a children’s hospital and a school, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.
Emergency crews were deployed across the affected areas to search damaged buildings and rescue people trapped under rubble. Authorities said rescuers had already pulled at least two survivors from collapsed structures.
Children’s Hospital Damaged
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the overnight strikes damaged a children’s hospital, shattering windows and setting vehicles on fire nearby.
An educational facility was also damaged, while missiles struck an industrial area in the Solomyanskyi district in the southwestern part of the capital.
The attack caused significant disruption across the city and surrounding region, with damage to electricity infrastructure leaving thousands of properties without power.
Energy workers were sent to damaged areas as authorities worked to restore electricity supplies.
Casualties Reported Outside Kyiv
The strikes also affected areas beyond the capital.
Kyiv regional governor Tymur Tkachenko said one person was killed and another injured in an attack in the Brovary district.
Residents had been repeatedly warned to seek shelter during the night as Ukrainian authorities issued missile alerts and air defence systems responded to threats approaching the capital.
Drone Enters Romanian Airspace
The overnight attacks also triggered heightened concern in neighbouring countries.
Romania’s Defence Ministry said a drone briefly entered Romanian airspace near the northern border with Ukraine.
According to Romanian authorities, the drone was detected about 13 kilometres east of Galați before crashing in an uninhabited area. A small fire broke out but was quickly extinguished, and no casualties or property damage were reported.
Romania later lifted the air alert.
Poland also said it had activated defensive air operations to protect its airspace as the Russian attack unfolded near its eastern neighbour.
Russia Claims Military Targets Hit
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces targeted a facility involved in producing components for drones and a weapons depot in Kyiv.
Those claims have not been independently verified.
The latest strikes underscore the continuing danger faced by civilians in Kyiv and surrounding regions as Russian and Ukrainian forces continue their long-running war.
