Former Cross River State Governor and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) presidential candidate, Donald Duke, has warned that Nigeria is on a dangerous path, saying the country requires urgent intervention to avert a looming national disaster.

Duke made the remarks on Tuesday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, where he explained why he had returned to active politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to him, the current state of the nation demands immediate action rather than passive observation, adding that Nigeria’s political and economic trajectory must be reversed.

“I returned to politics because of the urgency of where we are in Nigeria today. Disaster is looming if we don’t change the trajectory,” Duke said.

The former governor noted that citizens have two choices: remain on the sidelines analysing the country’s problems or actively participate in changing its direction.

“You could be a spectator and make all sorts of analyses, or you could get involved. The direction the country is going requires urgent intervention,” he stated.

Calls for Opposition Unity

Duke also pointed out that many of Nigeria’s current political leaders belong to the same generation that ushered in the Fourth Republic in 1999.

He recalled that he and President Bola Tinubu were both elected during the 1999 political transition but argued that the country’s leadership has failed to adequately address Nigeria’s pressing challenges.

“The folks who are in charge of the country today are generally my generation, and the president and I were the class of ’99. But the direction the country is going requires very urgent intervention,” he said.

As a member of the opposition, Duke urged opposition parties to put aside their differences and unite ahead of the 2027 elections.

He maintained that a united opposition would be better positioned to offer Nigerians a credible alternative capable of changing the country’s current direction.

“I’m not a member of the ruling party. So automatically, I’m in the opposition. Ideally, the opposition should come together,” Duke added.

The former presidential candidate stressed that Nigeria’s future depends on decisive leadership, political cooperation and policies capable of addressing the country’s economic and governance challenges.
