Guinea-Bissau Authorities Release Opposition Leader After Court Approves Medical Treatment Abroad

Guinea-Bissau’s military-led authorities have released prominent opposition leader and former Prime Minister Domingos Simões Pereira following a court order permitting him to travel overseas for urgent medical treatment.

Pereira, who had been held in pre-trial detention since earlier this month, was freed after the court ruled that his medical condition required specialized care unavailable in the country. Shortly after his release, he departed Bissau on a flight to Portugal to receive treatment.

The opposition leader’s detention had drawn widespread criticism from regional and international observers, with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) calling for the unconditional release of all detained political figures as part of efforts to restore confidence in Guinea-Bissau’s democratic transition.

Pereira, a former prime minister and one of the country’s most influential opposition figures, has been at the center of Guinea-Bissau’s political crisis since the military seized power in late 2025. Authorities have accused him of involvement in alleged plots against the transitional government, allegations his supporters have strongly denied as politically motivated.

The court’s decision to authorize medical treatment abroad has been welcomed by members of the opposition, who described the ruling as a humanitarian step while renewing calls for respect for due process, political freedoms, and the rule of law. They also urged the transitional authorities to guarantee the rights of all political detainees and create conditions for an inclusive democratic process.

Guinea-Bissau has experienced prolonged political instability marked by military interventions, disputed elections, and tensions between political actors. Regional leaders continue to encourage dialogue among stakeholders and have stressed the importance of a credible transition leading to democratic elections later this year.

The release of Pereira is expected to ease some political tensions, although observers say lasting stability will depend on continued dialogue, respect for judicial independence, and the implementation of an inclusive roadmap toward constitutional civilian rule.
