Ed Sheeran has spoken publicly about the controversy that erupted after rapper Macklemore was removed from his US tour, saying the episode forced him to confront difficult questions about political expression, freedom of speech and the war in Gaza.
The British music star made the remarks during his Philadelphia concert at Lincoln Financial Field, where he addressed the issue directly with fans.
How the Dispute Started
The controversy followed Macklemore’s appearance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on September 4, where he publicly expressed support for Palestinians and said “Free Palestine” during his performance.
Macklemore was later removed from the remaining US dates of Sheeran’s Loop Tour after objections were reportedly raised by venue owners.
The decision generated further controversy, with some supporting acts subsequently pulling out of the tour in support of Macklemore.
Sheeran said the decision was made by the tour promoter and explained that he had spent days communicating with venues in an effort to resolve the situation.
Sheeran Raises Freedom-of-Speech Concerns
During his Philadelphia appearance, Sheeran apologised for how the controversy had unfolded and acknowledged that difficult choices had been made.
He also questioned the broader implications of venues becoming involved in deciding what musicians can say on stage.
Although Sheeran has previously stressed that his concerts are primarily about music, he said the controversy had drawn him into a wider conversation about freedom of speech.
The singer said he had never wanted to be an “activist musician,” but the circumstances had made it difficult for him to remain outside the debate.
His Comments on Gaza
Sheeran also addressed the conflict in Gaza.
He described the Hamas attacks of October 2023 as “horrific” while expressing strong criticism of the situation that has followed in Gaza.
The singer described the conditions in Gaza as “catastrophic and unjustifiable” and also criticised what he referred to as systemic injustice in the occupied West Bank.
His remarks were significant because they came after he had previously emphasised that his concerts were intended to bring people together rather than become platforms for political arguments.
Protests Outside Philadelphia Concert
The dispute continued to generate reactions beyond the concert stage.
Pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside the Philadelphia venue, using the occasion to highlight the situation in Gaza and protest the handling of Macklemore’s removal.
Other fans maintained that concerts should remain focused on entertainment and music rather than political issues.
The competing reactions demonstrate how the Macklemore dispute has developed into a broader discussion about whether musicians should be free to express political views during performances and how much control venues and promoters should exercise over those statements.
Sheeran’s comments in Philadelphia have now placed the Grammy-winning singer more directly within that debate, despite his previous preference to keep politics separate from his live performances.
