The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has promised that the Nigeria Police Force will work to keep voters safe during the upcoming general elections.

Disu made the statement as political activities gather momentum ahead of the January polls.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to contest the election as he seeks another term in office.

Disu Gives Security Assurance

In an interview with AFP, Disu said the police were prepared to provide a secure environment for Nigerians to cast their ballots.

His statement comes amid concerns over insecurity in different parts of the country.

Nigeria continues to face threats from jihadist groups, kidnappers and other armed criminal networks.

These challenges could complicate security planning during the elections.

Protecting Voters and Election Materials

Election security involves more than protecting polling stations.

Security agencies must also protect electoral officials, voting materials and communities around polling centres.

They must respond to threats while ensuring that voters are not intimidated.

Nigeria has experienced political violence and heightened tension during previous election cycles.

The police will therefore face pressure to prevent a repeat of such incidents.

A Critical Test for the Police

Disu became Inspector General of Police about 10 months before the election.

That puts the police leadership at the centre of preparations for the polls.

The coming months will test the force’s ability to coordinate security across the country.

They will also test public confidence in the police.

The situation is particularly challenging because different regions face different security problems.

Some areas are dealing with insurgency. Others are affected by kidnapping and violent crime.

Voters Await Action

Political campaigns are expected to intensify as the election approaches.

The police will have to ensure that political rivalry does not escalate into violence.

For Nigerians, however, the most important issue will be whether they can reach polling centres and vote without fear.

Disu’s assurance is therefore significant.

But the real measure of the police response will come on election day.

As January approaches, Nigerians will be watching closely to see whether the security agencies can turn their promises into effective action on the ground.
