The proposed Tyson Fury-Anthony Joshua heavyweight showdown could become a battle between London and New York, with both cities positioning themselves to host the highly anticipated fight.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has called on the organisers of the proposed bout to consider Wembley Stadium, saying the capital is ready to stage the contest.
Speaking to BBC Sport on Thursday, Khan openly invited the promoters to begin discussions about bringing the fight to London.
“We want to host it in London. Talk to us; we are really keen to have it,” he said.
Khan argued that Wembley would provide a fitting setting for a clash between two of Britain’s biggest boxing stars, noting that the stadium has previously hosted major events and fights involving both men.
“We, the fans, want to see them box live in London,” he added.
Despite the mayor’s push, New York reportedly remains the preferred option for the organisers and Netflix, which is expected to broadcast the event.
Madison Square Garden is understood to be the leading alternative for a November date, although negotiations surrounding the final venue are yet to be concluded.
People familiar with the discussions reportedly told BBC Sport that talks concerning a London venue have stalled, with no confirmed date or scheduling arrangements currently in place.
The uncertainty is expected to be resolved soon as promoters move towards formally announcing the fight.
Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, is said to be seeking an announcement this week, with a press conference reportedly planned for next week.
The contest would bring together two of Britain’s most recognisable heavyweight fighters and has been the subject of intense speculation among boxing supporters.
While Wembley would give the proposed bout a major homecoming atmosphere for the British fighters, Madison Square Garden would provide a high-profile American setting and an international platform for the event.
The final decision will determine whether Joshua and Fury settle their long-awaited rivalry in London or New York.
