US President Donald Trump has revealed plans to significantly reduce joint military drills with South Korea, citing their costs and his rapport with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump explained that his administration would scale back the exercises, arguing they send an “inappropriate and hostile” message to North Korea.

He also mentioned South Korea’s decision not to align with the United States in its efforts to denuclearize Iran.

“These exercises are not only expensive, largely funded by the United States (as usual!), but they also convey a message that is entirely inappropriate and hostile,” Trump stated.

South Korea Examining Trump’s Statements

South Korean officials are currently examining Trump’s statements but remain hopeful that his connection with Pyongyang could eventually provide an opening for meaningful discussions.

Previously, Seoul had indicated that the annual military drills with the United States would continue as planned.

Trump noted it was too late to cancel the exercises as they were set to start on Monday.

This announcement follows shortly after North Korea’s ballistic missile tests, which remain prohibited under United Nations sanctions.

North Korea has yet to officially address Trump’s recent remarks.

Trump also mentioned a conversation with South Korea’s president about US efforts to denuclearize Iran, highlighting that Seoul chose not to participate.

This development might raise new questions about the future of the established US-South Korea security alliance, especially as tensions involving North Korea remain high.
