Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has stated his role in the current political climate is to keep opposition leaders under pressure as the 2027 general elections approach.

Wike shared this sentiment on Friday during discussions with journalists while inspecting infrastructure projects in Abuja.

Opposition Pressure Strategy

Wike highlighted that internal conflicts within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have weakened the opposition landscape, making it challenging to pinpoint a single dominant opposition party.

Typically, the PDP would be seen as the main opposition party, Wike noted, but its internal turmoil has diminished its political prowess.

“Who stands as the opposition leader now? Normally, it would be the PDP, but due to our crises, there’s no strong party to hold that title,” he explained.

Wike clearly expressed his lack of interest in easing the tensions for opposition figures during this political rivalry.

“My role is to ensure they’re uncomfortable at all times. They’ll experience stress; that’s what I’m here for,” he remarked.

Focused on Winning

Wike, formerly the governor of Rivers State, emphasized that political competition is about outmatching opponents rather than concerning oneself with their well-being.

“In any competition, your aim isn’t to make your competitor feel good. It’s about decisively defeating them,” Wike asserted.

He reiterated his intent to keep opposition politicians under constant pressure throughout the political battle.

Uneffected by Atiku and Obi

Wike also played down concerns regarding how former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi might handle the ongoing political scenario.

He indicated their reactions did not worry him and hinted at ramping up pressure if needed.

“The feelings of Atiku or Obi don’t cause me concern. If I learn of their discomfort, I’ll intensify their crisis,” Wike stated.

Wike, a PDP member and former governor of Rivers State, remains active in navigating the party’s internal issues and the general opposition dynamics ahead of the upcoming election cycle.
