Professor of Political Economy, Pat Utomi, expressed that Nigeria’s political and developmental course might have significantly shifted if former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua had survived his illness and fulfilled his term.

In an interview on Csuite Cafe, Utomi characterized Yar’Adua as a dedicated patriot who was genuinely invested in advancing Nigeria toward sustainable development.

Yar’Adua served as Nigeria’s president from 2007 until his passing on May 5, 2010, after which his vice president, Goodluck Jonathan, assumed the presidency.

Reflecting on his connection with the late president, Utomi shared that Yar’Adua once invited him to the Presidential Villa, encouraging him to join the administration as a minister. This invitation signalled Yar’Adua’s intent to integrate knowledgeable individuals into the government for national development.

Utomi conveyed that his experiences with Yar’Adua convinced him of the president’s true concern for Nigeria’s future and his commitment to its improvement.

Utomi proposed that Yar’Adua’s premature death impacted Nigeria’s political and economic advancement. He believed that Yar’Adua’s qualities could have fostered a different governance approach if he had completed his term.

Yar’Adua’s administration is recognized for initiatives like the Niger Delta amnesty program, electoral reforms, and efforts to enhance governmental accountability. His Seven-Point Agenda also prioritized areas such as energy, transport, food security, land reform, security, and human capital development. However, his prolonged illness and subsequent passing prompted uncertainty and a significant political transition.

Yar’Adua’s presidency continues to provoke discussions among political analysts due to its abrupt end. Utomi hopes the late president will be remembered for more than just holding office but as a leader devoted to Nigeria’s progress.

Over a decade posthumously, Yar’Adua’s political legacy remains a topic of debate regarding leadership, democratic governance, accountability, and Nigeria’s pursuit of sustainable development
