Kano State, the capital was abuzz with celebrations as officials organized a mass wedding for 1,500 couples on Friday. The regional government touted this two-day event as an initiative to assist low-income families with marriage expenses and bolster social stability.
State officials highlighted that the event was supported by the state’s social welfare program, bringing together couples from all 44 local government areas. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf approved the initiative, allocating approximately $1.1 million for its sponsorship.
Groom Abubakar Aliyu Musa participated to ease the financial burden on his and the bride’s families. He explained that the marriage idea helps families and husbands like him, who face financial challenges, to wed—enabled by government support.
Selection for participation wasn’t automatic; each of the 1,500 couples underwent medical screenings, including tests for HIV, hepatitis, and genotype compatibility.
For groom Samini Tijani Isa, the mass wedding provided an opportunity he otherwise wouldn’t have had due to life’s financial hardships.
Held at Kano’s central mosque, the ceremony observed Islamic rites. While women waited outside, male participants and officials conducted the proceedings with the governor present.
State officials aim to alleviate families’ financial burdens and help couples begin building their households. In addition to the wedding, new couples are set to receive furniture, food, other household items, and some monetary assistance.
