After being detained for nearly 24 hours, Osun State Commissioner for Environment Mayowa Adejoorin was released by the Nigeria Police Force’s Osun State Command. He had been taken into custody following a Saturday incident in Ilesa that involved a shooting in the Isokun area, leaving three people injured.
Following the incident at a street rally held by the Ilesa West Local Government Area chapter of the All Progressives Congress, three individuals reportedly sustained injuries near Isokun. Among those injured was 14-year-old Tobi Ilesanmi.
The situation has intensified into a conflict between the APC and the Accord Party, particularly following Adejoorin’s arrest while passing through Ilesa after the disturbances.
Abiodun Ojelabi, the spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, stated that the shooting incident involved Amotekun Corps operatives traveling in a vehicle with an official state number plate. He confirmed that three individuals were injured and subsequently hospitalized. At the APC rally, it was reported that Amotekun personnel exited from a vehicle labeled OSHAO4 and opened fire, leading to chaos.
As people sought safety, some of the rally participants chased after the Amotekun personnel. In an act of self-defense, one individual attempted to use a knife and successfully managed to escape.
Later, the police addressed the reported incident by deploying operatives from the Intelligence Response Team. They intercepted a white Lexus 350 belonging to Adejoorin due to its closeness to the scene. Upon stopping it, they found an Amotekun operative inside with Commissioner Adejoorin. The vehicle and its occupants were then taken to police headquarters for questioning.
