2027 Presidency: Kwankwaso Asks Atiku to Step Down for NDC

Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, the vice presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has appealed to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to abandon his bid for the 2027 presidency and support the party’s ticket.

Kwankwaso made the statement on Thursday during a meeting with members of the Fulani Farmers Association at his Abuja residence.

Addressing the political situation ahead of the 2027 general elections, Kwankwaso asked Atiku, who is contesting the presidency under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), to make way for the NDC.

The NDC chieftain also offered an assurance that Atiku would not be abandoned should the party emerge victorious at the polls.

“Step down for us; if we win, we will take care of you,” Kwankwaso said.

His comments come against the backdrop of continued attempts by opposition politicians to forge a common front ahead of the 2027 election and mount a stronger challenge against President Bola Tinubu and the APC.

Atiku, a former vice president, is among the leading opposition politicians seeking to become president in 2027. His political ambition has remained a major issue in discussions about the possibility of a united opposition.

The latest development is part of the broader political manoeuvring ahead of the election, as opposition figures consider alliances, candidates and strategies for the presidential contest.

Kwankwaso and Peter Obi, who was previously linked to the ADC presidential platform, left the party in May, according to the report, amid concerns over internal disagreements and court cases.

With the 2027 elections drawing closer, negotiations among opposition leaders are expected to continue as political parties seek alliances and attempt to consolidate their support bases across the country.
