A shipment containing 204 pump-action rifles has been intercepted at the Tincan Island Port in Lagos as Nigerian authorities intensify efforts to prevent illegal firearms from entering the country.

The Nigeria Customs Service said the weapons, reportedly brought in from Turkey, were seized following intelligence that alerted security operatives to the consignment.

The firearms were subsequently handed over to the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW).

The interception is significant because of concerns that illegally imported firearms could find their way into criminal networks and worsen security challenges across the country.

Intelligence-led operations such as the latest seizure are increasingly important to border agencies as they work to identify and stop suspicious consignments before they reach the wider public.

Following the handover, the seized weapons are expected to undergo documentation and other control procedures under the relevant authorities.

The eventual disposal of the firearms will also be carried out in accordance with established procedures governing seized weapons.

The operation demonstrates the need for continued collaboration between customs officials and security agencies responsible for combating the trafficking of small arms and light weapons.

Nigeria has continued to strengthen its border security measures in an effort to disrupt the networks behind the illicit movement of firearms and other prohibited items.

The seizure at Tincan Island Port therefore represents another intervention aimed at preventing potentially dangerous weapons from entering illegal circulation.
