Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has raised concerns over what he described as a suspicious credit transaction into one of his private bank accounts, warning that the incident may indicate a breach of his confidential banking information.

The allegation was contained in a statement issued on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu.

According to the statement, an unknown individual transferred money into Atiku’s personal account with the narration “Contribution Electioneering Campaign.”

The former vice president said neither he nor his campaign team authorised, requested or had prior knowledge of the transaction.

“His Excellency and his campaign neither solicited nor approved the payment, and have no knowledge of the individual or organisation responsible for the transfer,” the statement said.

Atiku described the development as disturbing, noting that the account involved is strictly private and its details have never been made public.

He questioned how an unknown person could obtain the confidential banking details of a private citizen.

“This account is strictly private, and its details are not in the public domain. The circumstances surrounding this transaction raise serious concerns about how confidential banking information was obtained,” the statement added.

The former vice president warned that the incident goes beyond his personal circumstances and raises broader concerns about the protection of Nigerians’ financial privacy.

“If the confidential banking details of a former Vice President and leading presidential candidate can be accessed and used without authorisation, then no Nigerian’s financial information can be considered secure,” he said.

He also expressed concern that the information may have been obtained through individuals with privileged access to sensitive banking records.

According to him, if such access was abused, it would amount to a serious breach of trust and could expose citizens to security risks.

“Should this prove to be the case, it would represent a grave abuse of power and could expose account holders to threats including kidnapping, terrorism, banditry, fraud and other criminal activities,” the statement said.

Atiku disclosed that security agencies have been notified of the incident, describing it as one of several suspicious developments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He urged Nigerians not to be distracted by what he characterised as attempts to undermine his reputation through what he called “old tactics of character assassination.”

“These desperate tactics have failed in the past and will fail again,” he stated.

The former vice president reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing his presidential ambition, insisting that he remains focused on providing credible leadership and practical solutions to Nigeria’s economic and governance challenges.

“The Waziri Adamawa remains committed to offering Nigerians credible leadership and practical solutions to the country’s challenges,” the statement concluded.
