EFCC Clarifies: Not All Osun State Bank Accounts Were Frozen

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified that it did not freeze all bank accounts belonging to the Osun State Government, stating that only one account was placed under temporary restriction over suspicious financial activities.

The clarification was made on Thursday by the EFCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwajaren, during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show.

According to Uwajaren, the anti-graft agency acted after detecting transactions it considered suspicious on a specific government account.

“The EFCC placed a temporary restriction on one Osun State Government account after observing suspicious activities in the past week. This does not mean all Osun State accounts have been frozen. Only the account under investigation is affected,” he said.

He explained that the commission is legally empowered to impose temporary restrictions on bank accounts while carrying out investigations into suspected financial crimes.

The clarification comes amid growing controversy over the commission’s action, which occurred just days before the Osun State governorship election.

The EFCC had earlier stated that the restriction was intended to prevent the alleged diversion of public funds while investigations continue.

The Osun State Government, however, has criticised the action, describing it as unlawful and politically motivated, while insisting that it would challenge the commission’s decision in court.

The dispute has further heightened political tensions in the state ahead of the upcoming governorship poll.
