President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerians to remain hopeful as the country prepares to mark its 66th Independence Anniversary.
The President said Nigeria was moving toward greater peace and development despite the challenges facing the country.
His message was delivered by House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas during a special Juma’at prayer held at the National Mosque in Abuja on Friday.
The event formed part of the activities leading to Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day on October 1, 2026.
‘Do not lose hope’
Tinubu acknowledged that Nigeria’s journey since independence had included significant challenges, setbacks and missed opportunities.
However, he urged citizens to remain optimistic about the country’s future.
According to the President, peace and development are returning, while the democratic process provides an avenue for addressing longstanding national challenges.
He described Nigeria as a country that has matured after 66 years of independence.
Tinubu highlights government reforms
The President also defended the direction of his administration, saying it was working to correct what he described as cumulative mistakes and missed opportunities from previous governments.
He urged Nigerians to consider the focus of the current government and support its ongoing reforms.
Tinubu said the country was on the right path and that Nigerians had already made substantial sacrifices toward building a better nation.
He further appealed for more time for his administration to complete its ongoing programmes and reforms.
Independence anniversary activities
Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary will be marked with a series of low-key activities.
The Federal Government’s official programme includes a Juma’at service, church service, an Independence Day public lecture and a nationwide presidential broadcast on October 1.
The anniversary provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s journey since independence in 1960 and the challenges and opportunities ahead.
