Pope Leo XIV has warned that rapid advances in artificial intelligence could raise serious questions about human dignity and the future of society.

The Pope spoke on Friday during his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace in Paris.

The meeting marked the opening of Leo’s four-day visit to France, the first official state visit by a pope to the country in 18 years.

AI must remain focused on people

Macron also addressed the growing influence of artificial intelligence, stressing the need to ensure that humans retain their central role as technology develops.

He called for international supervision of the most advanced systems to prevent their concentration in the hands of a limited number of powerful actors.

Macron also warned against the use of technology as a tool for oppression.

Leo XIV shared similar concerns, saying humanity could lose its sense of identity if technology is allowed to dominate everyday life without sufficient ethical guidance.

The Pope called for education that enables people to make ethical judgments about the use of emerging technologies.

Vatican opposition to nuclear weapons

Beyond artificial intelligence, the Pope addressed the continuing threat posed by nuclear weapons.

Leo reaffirmed the Vatican’s opposition to nuclear arms and criticized the doctrine of nuclear deterrence.

He argued that reliance on nuclear deterrence risks fueling another arms race and urged nations to seek peace through dialogue and justice.

His remarks came as conflicts continue to affect Europe and the Middle East.

Wider global issues discussed

The meeting between Macron and Leo XIV also covered several international issues.

According to the Élysée Palace, the two discussed the war in Ukraine, peace and stability in the Middle East, climate change, artificial intelligence and France’s partnerships with African countries.

The Pope is scheduled to continue his four-day programme in France with engagements focused on faith, human dignity, peace and other social issues.
