A suspected methanol poisoning outbreak in southern Nigeria has killed at least 49 people and left many others receiving treatment.

Health authorities in Ondo State said about 182 people have been affected in parts of Odigbo and Irele.

Approximately 100 people are still being treated.

Officials are continuing investigations into what caused the outbreak.

Victim Recounts Ordeal

Gbenga Oluwaseun, 32, is among those who survived the poisoning.

He said he suddenly became unwell during the night.

According to Oluwaseun, he noticed that his heart was beating rapidly after he went to bed.

He tried to alert people around him for assistance.

He eventually lost consciousness while being taken for help.

Suspected Drink Yet to Be Confirmed

Residents have identified a locally made herbal alcoholic drink called “Monkey Tail” as a possible source.

However, the authorities have not established that the drink caused the poisoning.

The investigation is continuing.

Young Adults Among Those Affected

Anthony Fashua, medical director of Life Care Hospital, said many of the seriously affected patients are relatively young.

He put the age of many victims at between 30 and 40.

Fashua also said some patients had existing health problems.

He mentioned hepatitis B and organ dysfunction among conditions found in some of those affected.

The doctor said these conditions may have added to the complications associated with the suspected methanol poisoning.

Rural Communities Face Greater Risk

Locally produced alcohol remains popular in many parts of Nigeria.

It is often more affordable than commercial alcoholic drinks.

The outbreak has renewed concerns about the production and consumption of locally made alcoholic beverages.

Authorities are expected to determine the substance responsible as laboratory and health investigations continue.

Until then, the suspected link to “Monkey Tail” remains unconfirmed.
