The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) National Chairman, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has raised concerns about legal disputes and factionalisation within several opposition parties ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time, Baba-Ahmed said opposition parties were closely watching developments as preparations for the elections intensify.

He claimed that about five or six of the roughly eight or nine parties involved in the emerging opposition coalition were dealing with court cases.

“In the coalition that we have now, we have about eight or nine parties. Five or six all have court cases. We’ve settled ours now, but others have even more profound challenges.”

According to Baba-Ahmed, some political parties had been divided into competing factions, raising questions about which candidates and party structures would ultimately be recognised.

He said such disputes could create uncertainty as parties move closer to the election.

‘We don’t sleep with both eyes closed’

Baba-Ahmed also accused the ruling APC of sometimes engaging in what he described as “playing dirty” politics.

“We know that the APC is not particularly innocent when it comes to playing dirty,” he said, adding that opposition parties were taking precautions to protect themselves.

The PRP chairman stressed that opposition groups could not afford to be unprepared.

He said the coalition was focused on strengthening cooperation among its members and improving their collective ability to contest the 2027 election.

Opposition coalition plans

Baba-Ahmed said the coalition was working towards developing a common identity and policy agenda before resolving questions surrounding presidential candidates.

He said the proposed programme would address issues including insecurity, poverty, economic management, youth opportunities, corruption and the structure of the Nigerian state.

The PRP chairman also said opposition parties needed to pool their resources and support one another.

His comments come as opposition groups continue consultations and political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
