A fresh escalation of fighting in Ethiopia’s Tigray region has raised fears of another major conflict, following reports that federal forces have moved deeper into the territory.
The strategic town of Alamata has reportedly been recaptured by government forces after several days of fighting.
Hospital sources told the BBC that 52 civilians were killed during three days of clashes around the town.
Heavy artillery was reportedly used in populated areas, including residential neighbourhoods and a market.
Medical facilities supported by Médecins Sans Frontières have also treated more than 700 wounded people across Tigray, according to reports.
Government forces move towards Korem
Following the reported capture of Alamata, federal forces are said to be advancing north towards Korem, approximately 100 kilometres south of Mekelle.
The developments come amid renewed hostility between Ethiopia’s federal authorities and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front.
The two sides accuse each other of breaching the peace agreement reached in 2022 after the previous Tigray war.
That agreement had raised hopes of a lasting end to the conflict, but tensions have continued in the region.
Conflict reaches neighbouring regions
The latest violence has not been confined to Tigray.
Fighting has also reportedly been recorded in parts of Afar and Amhara, neighbouring regions that have previously been affected by instability and armed conflict.
The situation remains difficult to assess because communications in affected areas have been disrupted.
As a result, independent verification of claims concerning troop movements, territorial control and casualties remains limited.
Fears of another major war
The renewed clashes have revived memories of the 2020–2022 Tigray war, one of the deadliest conflicts in Africa in recent years.
The previous war caused extensive displacement and was associated with a death toll running into the hundreds of thousands, according to humanitarian and research estimates.
The latest escalation has therefore triggered concern that the fragile peace could collapse further.
Humanitarian agencies face the additional challenge of providing medical care and other assistance while fighting continues and access to affected communities remains difficult.
